How-to: Send Ether (ETH) from Kraken to Ledger Nano S using MyEtherWallet.com

One of the first things I wanted to do after getting my new Ledger Nano S was to transfer some Ether that I purchased from Kraken over to my Nano S. It’s very important not to leave your cryptocoins on an exchange because then yo are no longer in control of your coins. Exchanges get hacked with remarkable frequency, so you should move your coins onto a location you are fully in control of, such as a hardware or software wallet.

Using the Ledger Nano S with MyEtherWallet to send and receive Ether

You can either use the native Ledger Nano’s native Ethereum app or MyEtherWallet.com (MEW) to send and receive Ether. In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to use MEW to send Ether from Kraken to your Nano.

Some basics first:

  • A single ETH address on your Nano S can support not just ETH but also multiple ERC-20 tokens.
  • ERC-20 tokens are supported only through MyEtherWallet.

So what are the steps involved?

  1. Find your Nano’s Ether address
  2. Send Ether from Kraken to your Nano

STEP 1. Find your Nano’s Ether address

To receive Ether into your Nano S, you need an address on the Nano that you can send Ether to. So first follow the steps below to get this address:

  1. Plug your Ledger device into your computer, and unlock it.
  2. Select the Ethereum app and go to the settings of the app to activate “Browser support”. If at any time you wish to use the Ledger Ethereum Chrome application, you’ll have to disable this setting. Back out to the “Use Wallet to view accounts” screen. If you don’t do this, you will get an error : {“errorCode”:5}Error code 5 - How to transfer ETHER using Nano and MEW - TheFaithfulInvestor
  3. If you would like to use Ethereum tokens also, enable the Contract Data setting as well.
  4. Go to MyEtherWallet and select the “Send Ether & Tokens” tab.
  5. Select the ‘Ledger Wallet’ option and click on the “Connect to Ledger Wallet” button.Send Ether tab - How to transfer ETHER using Nano and MEW - TheFaithfulInvestor
  6. At the next screen titled “Select HD derivation path”, you will see m/44’/60’/0′ Ledger (ETH) is already selected.Select HD derivation path - How to transfer ETHER using Nano and MEW - TheFaithfulInvestor
  7. To receive ETH, use any of the addresses you see on screen. Note that the native Ledger Ethereum app can only access the first address you see here. So if you want to use that app and MEW interchangeably, choose the first address on the list.
  8. To send ETH from your Nano, click on the Unlock Your Wallet button.

STEP 2: Send Ether from Kraken to your Nano

Now that you have the Nano’s ETH address, you can go over to Kraken and initiate the transfer.
